Work can be very stressful. There are days when you feel there is always new projects adding up and you are not able to finish any of them. There are days when your clients or colleagues are in a bad mood and work just is no fun. We all have already experienced one of these and, stressful days. But there are some tips to make such a day a little better. You can try these relaxing activities when you are stressed at work

Drink a cup of herbal tea. 

In the company I am working for, we can have free coffee or tea. There are several herbal teas available such as lemon tea, peppermint tea or chamomile tea. Chamomile tea is great if you want to calm down. I drink every morning a cup of peppermint tea. It helps against both anxiety and bad breath. If you have access to hot water at work, you can bring your favorite tea and drink it whenever you need it. 

Count your blessings

On days when I feel down, I find it useful to remember all the nice things in my life. If you think about it, you can find many aspects of your life that can make you happy: your family, your home, your friends but also small things such as the flower you saw on your way to work, the good weather or the time you spent reading during your commute.

Stand up and have a short walk

When you remain at your desk, it is easy to be overwhelmed with your daily workload. Walking to the restroom, to the cafeteria or just going to speak to a colleague instead of writing an email can help you to feel less stressed. This is also good for your health. Sitting the all day at your desk can bring health issues such as obesity or cardio-vascular problems. You can also choose to have a somewhat longer walk during your lunch break.

Have a healthy snack

This can be a piece of fruit, or some nuts for instance. Eat slowly in order to really enjoy your food. The snack will give you new energy to keep working through the day. 

Meditate

You do not have to meditate half an hour. You can just take a few minutes for your meditation and mindfulness practice. Research has shown that meditation reduces stress and that even 10 minutes a day can have a positive impact on your mental health over time.

Use essential oils

Aromatherapy uses plant material, including essential oils, to improve psychological or physical well-being. Some essential oils such as lavender, orange, rose, lemon, or bergamot can help relieve stress and anxiety. 

Use self-acupressure

Acupressure is an alternative medicine practice similar to acupuncture. Physical pressure is applied to acupuncture points with the aim of clearing blockages in these meridians. When I delivered my third baby, the midwife used acupressure and it definitely helped. In Germany, where my three children were born, peridural anesthesia is indeed not popular amongst midwives. If acupressure can help by childbirth, it can definitely help you to lower stress at work. A good tip to begin with is a ear massage. Start by massaging your earlobe and then keep massaging the outer shell of your ear.

    Great tips! Work can be so stressful sometimes. I have been trying to get up and walk every hour – even if its just to walk around the building. It helps to get away from your desk. I have not tried essential oils, but a lot of my friends at work use them regularly. I will have to try it out. Thanks again for a great post.

      Thanks for your comment! Regarding essential oils, I listed them in the post because I know many people who find them very useful but I am not an expert either. I work in an open space kind of office so I do not dare to experiment to much with essential oils. As for walking, it definitely helps. I noticed that when I have a problem to solve, I often find the solution on the way to the restroom or the cafeteria.
